Pit bull attack on a toddler caught on camera in Texas 2023

This week in Texas, a Pit bull attack on a toddler with his mom caught on camera went viral.

Let's take a second to analyze this clip for training and mindset purposes. While the child was okay, thank God! I think a lot could have been done to better secure and prepare for a safe outcome. Whether you want to call it the grace of God or luck, personally, I am shocked this scenario turned out as well as it did.

Comment down below with your thoughts on this video! What she did do right and wrong, and any ideas about what she could

have done better.

For my analysis on this Pit bull attack on a toddler caught on camera in Texas 2023, here is my list of what the victim's mother could have done better.

  1. Situational awareness

  2. Not allowing a young child to follow behind her

  3. No self defense tools

  4. Not dropping her bag/coffee

  5. Not screaming louder for help

  6. Not being violent enough with the dog

  7. Allowing her kids to stay and press against the door once inside

  8. Sister could have come to the door with a kitchen knife

  9. The sister, instead of filming, should've been yelling at the kids to go lock themselves in a room

  10. The sister could've been immediately checking the boy for injuries

  11. I'm going to assume no medical equipment or knowledge was available

What drives me insane is that these news stories never give good post-incident advice!

I pray to God this woman gets a clue and adds something to her self-defense tool kit that's not "extra food" for distraction, as recommended by the "safety professional / dog trainer" at the end of the video. That b!$%ch should be b-slapped for that one. She's going to get someone killed! She obviously has zero clue about a dog's drive and has never been attacked by a dog with the intention to kill. It's like she watched an old movie where the robbers distract the guard dogs with a T-bone steak, and everything goes smoothly. WHAT A JOKE!

Be prepared for anything...

While my first instinct goes to GUN, shooting dogs intertwined with children at your feet can be very hard. I speak from experience of not wanting to shoot my leg or my own dog from a pit bull attack. I'm not saying at all that a gun should be ruled out! It's just something to keep in mind while reacting in the moment. Creating space enough to take a shot or a close-quarter shot would still be my first option.

Overall, being prepared in as many ways as possible at all times for anything is the best solution, not only with various tools but also various scenario training on how to use them so you can make quick decisions in a fast situation.

Knives at the ready could be an excellent option for a dog attack. I like to keep my knife on my left side to access a weapon from both hands. The gun can be drawn from my right for the opportunity to duel wield or carry a child in the right. I also practice drawing and shooting with my left hand! Giving yourself lots of options in your skill set will help you prepare for quick reactive options and wild cards.

Let's Talk Situational Awareness

Before being prepared for a reaction, the main issue I see here, above all, is actually avoidance! There seems to be a complete lack of situational awareness by the mother.

When watching the full video back slowly, you will notice the mother, while walking to her car, has her head down and her small child walking behind her. She should be looking around and have her primary focus be on her child. The small son is fully behind her on the other side of the car when he is attacked.

I also noticed she did not drop her bag or hot coffee until she was almost back at her door! How could your first instinct not be to prioritize using your spare hand to grab your child and maybe throw the hot coffee at the dog? This is why training your brain to drop items in your hands during dry fire practice is a great idea! Preparing your brain for wild cards by imagination or by watching videos like this, then reenacting them live, is a great idea for self-defense training.

P.S. Please take a moment to google "how to reenforce my door henges" and then put that on your to do list immediately! This is something everyone should do to their bolt and handle and well as door henges. Many are VERY weak!

Bites for the neck is a kill instinct and the mom is now fully on the other side of the car.

You are safe now what?

The first thing I would do after a situation like this while multi-tasking or delegating 911 to the sister would be to check the child for massive bleeding. When calling 911, tell them your address, that you need officers and medical attention, tell them there has been a dog attack, give the dog description, and then HANG UP! Immediately turn your full attention to your child and search head-to-toe clothes OFF for massive bleeding. This is why medical training and having quality medical gear are essential. Had that child had an arterial bleed from the dog, he likely would have passed before the officers arrived. PLEASE read my "Stop The Bleed" Blog to learn more!

I will end this article with an un-fun fact....

Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they're responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths.

While ANY animal can flip a switch and be dangerous, it would be stupid not to automatically have your guard up around specific breeds and to especially teach children this!
